Many thought it was just another celebration, but the real reason was much deeper.
Just a few days ago, Deschamps suffered the loss of his mother. The legendary coach temporarily left France’s training camp to travel and say goodbye to her with his family, and only returned to the team once the funeral was over.
Before the match, the coach himself acknowledged that they had been difficult days.
“Obviously, I had difficult days in which I felt devastated. Since I returned, I have recovered by preparing for this match. It is good to keep the mind occupied”, he said.
Aware of the difficult moment his coach was going through, Mbappé decided to dedicate his goal to him with a hug that became one of the most emotional images of this World Cup.
The gesture was applauded by the fans, who pointed out that, beyond the results and the pressure of the tournament, football also leaves room for empathy and support among teammates.
