Raúl Jiménez delivered one of the most emotional moments of the 2026 World Cup by scoring his first goal in a World Cup and breaking down in tears in the middle of the celebration. A moment that not only meant a goal for Mexico, but also the closing of a story marked by pain, resilience, and perseverance.

The Mexican striker arrived at this World Cup as the undisputed starter under Javier Aguirre, after years of ups and downs in his World Cup journey. In Brazil 2014 he was a young promise; in Russia 2018 he lost prominence to other forwards; and in Qatar 2022 he arrived hampered by osteitis pubis that limited his participation to just 116 minutes in total, without starting in any of the matches.

However, his story changed forever in 2020, when he suffered a skull fracture after a heavy collision in the Premier League with David Luiz. The blow was so severe that doctors seriously doubted his return to professional soccer. Jiménez, however, responded with a phrase that defined his mindset: “we’ll see”.

After months of recovery and a long rehabilitation, he returned to the field with a protective helmet, regained his level in English football, and managed to return to a World Cup. He himself has even acknowledged in interviews that his comeback was “almost a miracle”, recalling that he was not aware of what had happened that day of the impact.

At the 2026 World Cup, that journey reached its most symbolic point. At Estadio Ciudad de México, the same place where his career began, Jiménez scored his first World Cup goal with a header, celebrated with his teammates, formed a heart with his hands, and pointed to the sky in tribute to his father, to whom he had promised he would score at football’s biggest stage.

The attacker had recently lost his father, who had dreamed of seeing that moment while he was alive. After the goal, the striker broke down emotionally, in a scene that quickly went around the world.
The use of his protective headband has also been widely discussed, an element that became part of his identity since the 2020 accident and that symbolizes his return to top-level football after an injury that could have ended his career.

More than a goal, Raúl Jiménez’s at the 2026 World Cup stood as the closing of a cycle: that of a player who came back from a life-or-death situation, went through different World Cups with obstacles, and finally fulfilled a personal promise on football’s biggest stage.
