Ecuador’s defeat in its most recent 2026 World Cup match left many possible explanations, but on social media one theory stole all the laughs: it all would have begun when a group of fans decided to put the national team’s jersey on the iconic Rocky Balboa statue in Philadelphia.

The action, carried out as a gesture of support before the match, quickly went viral. However, after the unfavorable result, dozens of users recalled an old superstition linked to the monument: several teams and fans who have dressed Rocky in their colors ended up suffering unexpected sports defeats.
Although there is no evidence whatsoever of a “curse”, the coincidence was enough for the internet to do its thing. Memes, jokes, and comments flooded social media, with fans humorously insisting that they should have never touched the legendary movie character.

For many Ecuadorians, the story was nothing more than a funny World Cup anecdote. But others were already asking, between laughs, that for the next match no one go near the statue… just in case.
