Today it seems like an impossible image to imagine. However, it really happened.
Long before the rivalry between Argentina and England was forever marked by the 1986 World Cup, Diego Maradona posed wearing England’s shirt, while Freddie Mercury appeared wearing that of the Argentine national team.

The photograph was taken in 1981 during Queen’s visit to Buenos Aires. The British band was performing a series of historic concerts in Argentina and, as part of a promotional activity, met with Diego Maradona, who at the time was already the great star of Argentine football.

The shirt exchange left behind an unforgettable image: Maradona wearing England’s colors and Freddie Mercury in Argentina’s sky blue and white, a scene that just a few years later would have been unthinkable due to the Falklands War and, later, the unforgettable Argentina vs England match at the 1986 Mexico World Cup.
Over time, that photograph became a true historical curiosity that periodically goes viral again, especially when the two national teams face each other again in a major tournament.

An image that shows that, sometimes, history holds scenes that today seem impossible to believe.
