An unusual moment took place outside the England national team’s concentration hotel in Mexico City, where a Mexican fan caused surprise by openly showing support for the rival of the Mexican National Team in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
In videos that quickly went viral on social media, the man can be seen wearing a red England national team jersey, holding a United Kingdom flag and another jersey belonging to footballer Jude Bellingham.
From outside the hotel, the fan repeatedly shouted: “Go, England! You’ll never walk alone!”, even singing the iconic chant associated with Liverpool, which over time has spread to other English football fan bases.
But what drew the most attention was not only his support for the rival, but his explanation.
In another recording, the fan said: “The Beatles are to blame for me supporting England”, in addition to directly addressing players from the squad as they passed near the place, including Jude Bellingham, whom he greeted in Spanish.
The situation generated divided reactions on social media. While some users defended his right to support any national team, others harshly criticized his stance, considering it strange for a Mexican to cheer for the direct rival in a World Cup.
He even received some insults at the scene, to which he responded with a phrase that fueled the debate even more: “Everyone supports whoever they want, this isn’t politics”.
The episode ended up becoming a new viral topic of the 2026 World Cup, reopening the discussion about football identity, freedom of fandom, and the limits of fanaticism in international tournaments.
