Marc Cucurella experienced one of the most emotional moments of his career off the pitch when he spoke publicly for the first time about Mateo, his son diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
During an interview with content creator Pau Brunet (@paupautista), the Spanish defender was surprised with a very personal question:
“What has been the most emotional goal, speaking metaphorically, that your son has given you? The one that made you cry with joy?”
Cucurella remained silent for a long time. Emotion overwhelmed him and tears began to fall. They even offered to change the question or remove that moment from the interview, but he decided to continue.
“This is the first time I’ve done this and talked about this… for me, it’s a difficult subject”, he confessed, visibly emotional.
He then explained what hurts him most as a father:
“It kind of makes me suffer, you know? Because sometimes we don’t know how we can help him. Those things, especially when I see that he’s not doing well, make me suffer.”
His words quickly went viral, and thousands of people highlighted the honesty with which he spoke about a feeling experienced by many families with children on the autism spectrum.
Beyond the footballer, many discovered a father who is simply trying to support his son in the best way possible.
