Sometimes words are not needed to explain what football means.
After the final whistle that sent Argentina through to the next round of the World Cup, cameras captured a scene that quickly began to go viral on social media.
On one side was Lionel Messi, hugging his teammates and celebrating another qualification with an impossible-to-hide smile. Just a few metres away, in the same frame, Jude Bellingham stood with his head down and his eyes full of tears after England’s elimination.
The image moved thousands of fans because it shows, in just a few seconds, the two most intense sides of the sport: the absolute happiness of someone who achieves a goal and the deep pain of someone who sees a dream they worked for years to achieve slip away.
On social media, many agreed that the scene perfectly represents what makes football so special: the same match can bring the greatest joy to some and the greatest sadness to others.
Beyond shirts and rivalries, the photograph delivered one of the most human moments of this World Cup.
