Spain secured a dramatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup, but one of the most talked-about images of the day had nothing to do with a goal or a celebration.
As soon as the match ended, Lamine Yamal knelt on the pitch and said a brief prayer before joining his teammates’ celebrations.
The young forward practices the Muslim faith and, as he has done at other important moments in his career, wanted to take a few seconds to give thanks for the victory. His gesture was captured by the cameras and quickly began to go viral on social media.
However, it is not the first time Yamal has spoken publicly about his faith. Months ago, he responded to those who tried to mock his beliefs with a phrase that went around the world:
“I am Muslim, and using religion as a joke on a football pitch makes them look ignorant and racist.”
The footballer explained that he has never felt the need to hide who he is and argued that every person should be able to live their religion with freedom and respect, regardless of where they are.
Many fans pointed out that the image represents exactly that: a World Cup where footballers from different cultures, nationalities, and religions coexist, united by the same sport.
Beyond the result, Lamine’s moment was widely appreciated because it reminded people that football can also be a space for respect, diversity, and pluralism.
