There are stories that can only happen at a World Cup, and Jordan Henderson’s seems straight out of a movie.
England’s experienced midfielder didn’t even come on in the quarterfinal match. He spent the 90 minutes—and extra time—on the bench, without touching the ball even once.
But when the final whistle came and the English celebration began, everything changed.
Amid the euphoria, Henderson went out to celebrate the victory, but when he was planning to head back, tragedy struck. The player lost his balance while trying to get past an advertising board, and after the impact it was clear that he had been injured.
Subsequent tests confirmed that he will not be able to play again for the remainder of the 2026 World Cup and will have to undergo surgery, as he suffered a wrist fracture.
As if that were not enough, Henderson had also been booked during the match for protesting from the bench, completing one of the tournament’s most unusual statistics: he did not play a single minute, did not touch the ball, received a yellow card, and ended up injured while celebrating qualification.
The sequence quickly went viral and sparked a wave of jokes on social media. Many claimed that “it is the strangest World Cup in history”, while others lamented that a footballer with so much experience bowed out of the tournament in such an unfortunate way.
