Not every story a World Cup leaves behind ends with a trophy in hand.
Cape Verde’s national team returned home after delivering the best performance in its history at a World Cup and was welcomed by a crowd that turned the streets into a true national celebration.
Thousands of people came out to celebrate the team’s arrival, waving flags, singing, and following the route of the bus carrying the players. Although the team was eliminated before the final, for much of the country it had already achieved something far more important: proving that a small nation could compete on equal terms with the great powers of football.
During the 2026 World Cup, Cape Verde surprised the world by reaching the final rounds of the tournament for the first time and delivering performances that earned the admiration of fans from different countries. Its campaign was considered a historic achievement for a nation of just over half a million inhabitants.
That is why, when the squad landed back in the archipelago, the result took a back seat. Entire families, children, and adults waited for hours to thank them for putting Cape Verde’s name at the very top of world football.
Images of the welcome began to go viral, and many users pointed out that these kinds of scenes are a reminder that sport can also unite an entire country, even when the title is not won.
On social media, several fans summed up the feeling with a phrase that was repeated over and over again: “They did not return as World Cup champions, they returned as champions of our hearts.”
